Die Tscherkessen lebten im 19. Jahrhundert überwiegend im Nordkaukasus. Im Zuge der Bemühungen Russlands, diese Region unter die eigene Kontrolle zu bringen (Kaukasuskrieg, 1817-1864), wurden mehrere Hunderttausend Menschen ins Osmanische Reich deportiert.
