Der Ort Belen (arab. بيلان Bailān) liegt an einer wichtigen Verbindungstraße zwischen Anatolien und Syrien (der sogenannten 'Syrischen Pforte'). Dieser Bedeutung Rechnung tragend, hat Sultan Süleyman der Prächtige den Ort 1551 mit einem Komplex aus Moschee, Khan, Hammam und Armenküche (imaret) ausstatten lassen .
Der Belen Fluß (arab. نهر بيلان Nahr Bailān) teilt den Ort Belen in zwei Teile, auf einer Seite des Flusses befand sich das Viertel der türkischen Bewohner, auf der anderen das der armenischen ( 164). (SK)

Die Tscherkessen lebten im 19. Jahrhundert überwiegend im Nordkaukasus. Im Zuge der Bemühungen Russlands, diese Region unter die eigene Kontrolle zu bringen (Kaukasuskrieg, 1817-1864), wurden mehrere Hunderttausend Menschen ins Osmanische Reich deportiert. Sie siedeln als eigene Volksgruppen bis heute im Wesentlichen in der Türkei, Syrien und Jordanien. ( 43-49) Die Reisende Mary Esmé Scott-Stevenson ist Tscherkessen in der Region Adana begegnet und erwähnt, 1860 seien 20.000 Tscherkessen im Hafen Mersin an Land gegangen ( 115). Die Gruppe auf dem Schiff mag sich auf dem Weg in ihr neues Siedlungsgebiet in Nordsyrien befunden haben. (SK)
